UK government still wants Apple to break data encryption

The authoritarian, surveillance-loving UK Labour government remains deeply committed to magical thinking, slamming yet another encryption-busting “Technical Capability Notice” (TCN) on Apple, according to the Financial Times.  The difference is that this time it says it only wants to damage the privacy and security of the UK’s subject population. “The UK government has issued a new order to Apple to create a back door into its cloud storage service, this time targeting only British users’ data,” the FT reported. It’s not over till it’s over Snap back in time and you’ll recall the UK Home Office secretly demanded that Apple create a worldwide back door [...]

9 fast fixes for common Google Docs problems

Once upon a time, a word processor was little more than a blank canvas for your finger-transmitted musings: You’d open up the program, type whatever you wanted — and, well, that was pretty much it. These days, dealing with documents has practically become an art. And even though Google Docs is among the more approachable options out there (paging Microsoft Office Ribbon…), the service has grown surprisingly multilayered as of late. For the most part, that’s a good thing. Docs is still generally quite easy to use, and it packs more than enough punch for most common word processing purposes. [...]

Microsoft 365: A guide to the updates

Microsoft 365 (and Office 365) subscribers get more frequent software updates than those who have purchased Office without a subscription, which means subscribers have access to the latest features, security patches, and bug fixes. But it can be hard to keep track of the changes in each update and know when they’re available. We’re doing this for you, so you don’t have to. Following are summaries of the updates to Microsoft 365/Office 365 for Windows over the past year, with the latest releases shown first. We’ll add info about new updates as they’re rolled out. Note: This story covers updates [...]

Qualcomm defeats Arm’s final legal arguments in licensing trial

Arm this week lost its legal battle with Qualcomm in a multi-faceted license agreement trial with the release of a judgment in Qualcomm’s favor by US district judge Maryellen Noreika. Last December, a jury in the US District Court for the District of Delaware ruled in favor of Qualcomm and its acquisition, Nuvia, on two of three counts relating to a licensing dispute, and declared a mistrial on a third count. The final judgment released on Tuesday was a ruling on the third count, and in it, Judge Noreika wrote that neither Qualcomm nor Nuvia had breached an Architecture License [...]

Microsoft urged to change deadline for end of Windows 10 support

Microsoft is facing a last-ditch campaign against its decision to end support for Windows 10 later this month. The software giant has already made concessions to European consumers by extending support for an additional year, and US customers are wondering why the same extension can’t be applied across the Atlantic. Businesses and consumers alike are hoping for a last-minute change of plan. The campaign is being led by PIRG, a consumer group that is looking to persuade Microsoft to think again about its decision to withdraw support from Windows 10 on October 14.  Businesses around the world will be facing [...]

Microsoft revamps top exec roles, cites AI’s ‘tectonic’ impact for reshuffle

Microsoft on Wednesday unveiled a corporate reorganization of its commercial business, appointing Judson Althoff as CEO of the division. Althoff, formerly the company’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer, will take on the new role to more tightly integrate sales, marketing, operations, and engineering under one roof. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told employees through an internal message the leadership changes are designed to help customers and partners harness AI for productivity, while sharpening Microsoft’s focus on AI innovation. “We are in the midst of a tectonic AI platform shift, one that requires us to both manage and grow our [...]

A week with Apple’s new AirPods Pro 3

With built-in translation and health tracking, Apple’s latest AirPods Pro 3 earbuds ($249) can arguably be seen as a legitimate business expense for anyone who travels internationally. If not, they’re still going to be an attractive proposition for any iPhone user. I’ve spent a week with the latest set.  AirPods are an important product family for Apple. Research indicates Apple holds 23.3% of the Bluetooth earbuds market while Consumer Intelligence Research Partners says 42% of iPhone users also have a Bluetooth headset, most of them made by Apple or Beats. The company sells millions of these every year, so any new update is significant. How [...]

Slack dev tools pave the way for new AI agents

A new wave of AI agents are coming to Slack, enabled by the addition of several developer tools. It’s now easier to build and launch agents that tap into real-time conversation data held in the collaboration app, Slack said on Wednesday, and for users to interact with third-party AI assistants such as Claude or Perplexity directly from their Slack workspace.   The result is scalable agent integrations that can provide users with more accurate and relevant information in the flow of their work, Slack said. “For employees, this means agents that actually help, right next to where you talk to [...]

Microsoft Planner cheat sheet: How to get started

Remember when “planning” at work meant sticky notes plastered across your monitor and endless email threads about who’s doing what? As it is wont to do, Microsoft has “reimagined” the sea of Post-it notes as a fairly sophisticated set of software planning tools, and the result is something that might actually make you less resistant to the idea of organizing your work life. Microsoft has smooshed together three of its most popular productivity tools — the personal task manager To Do, the team-focused Planner, and the robust Project for the web — into a single, intelligent workspace now known simply [...]

Employees overtrust humanlike AI, ignoring its flaws

Trust in generative AI (genAI) has surged globally despite gaps in AI safeguards because of its humanlike ability to respond to queries or prompts, according to a new study by IDC. Only 40% of organizations invest in “trustworthy AI,” or AI with guardrails. Yet, those investing the least view genAI as 200% more trustworthy than traditional, proven machine learning — despite the latter being more established and having greater reliability and explainability. “Our research shows a contradiction: that forms of AI with humanlike interactivity and social familiarity seem to encourage the greatest trust, regardless of actual reliability or accuracy,” said [...]

11 Android Quick Settings additions that’ll supercharge your efficiency

Quick: When’s the last time you really, truly thought about your Android device’s Quick Settings setup? If you’re like most mammals I know, the answer probably ranges somewhere between “eons ago” and “never.” And it’s no surprise: Android’s Quick Settings area, which is in the midst of getting some significant upgrades in usability as we speak (helloooo, tile resizing!), is one of those things that’s just sort of there. It’s convenient, sure, but it’s all too easy to forget that it’s completely customizable — and expandable, too. It can turn into an invaluable home for your own custom Android app [...]

California AI Bill SB 53 officially becomes law

The first kick at the AI legislative can in California may have failed, but a new iteration of it succeeded with the signing into law on Monday of Senate Bill 53 (SB 53), The Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act (TFIA), by the state’s governor, Gavin Newsom. California, he said in a statement, has proven that it can “establish regulations to protect our communities, while also ensuring that the growing AI industry continues to thrive. This legislation strikes that balance.” SB 53’s passing follows Newsom’s veto last year of Senate Bill 1047 (SB 1047), known as the Safe and Secure [...]

Austrian Armed Forces switch from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice

The Austrian Armed Forces are discontinuing the use of Microsoft Office in favor of the open-source office software LibreOffice, Heise reports. The decision covers around 16,000 workstations and is motivated by the desire for technical independence and secure data processing within its own infrastructure. Planning for the move began back in 2020 when it became clear that Microsoft Office was heading for the cloud. Since 2023, Libre Office has become the standard in several departments, and this year Microsoft Office 2016 was removed from all computers. However, exceptions are granted, with some users being allowed to use Microsoft Office 2024 [...]

Agentic AI – Ongoing coverage of its impact on the enterprise

Over the next few years, agentic AI is expected to bring not only rapid technological breakthroughs, but a societal transformation, redefining how we live, work and interact with the world. And this shift is happening quickly. “By 2028, 33% of enterprise software applications will include agentic AI, up from less than 1% in 2024, enabling 15% of day-to-day work decisions to be made autonomously,” according to research firm Gartner. Unlike traditional AI, which typically follows preset rules or algorithms, agentic AI adapts to new situations, learns from experiences, and operates independently to pursue goals without human intervention. In short, agentic [...]
